The latest Leicester City news as the side may need to pick up a result at St James’ Park in order to retain their Premier League status on Monday night.
Former Leicester City striker Gary Lineker has sent a plea to colleague Alan Shearer for Newcastle United to ‘take it easy’ when City visit St James’ Park on Monday night.
Depending on the result between Leeds United and West Ham on Sunday, City could go into the game against the Magpies needing a result in order to take the fight against relegation to the final game of the season. Nottingham Forest’s win over Arsenal on Saturday means that they are now out of the running to go down, meaning that two of three teams will now drop into the championship next season.
Leeds are one of those and are in action this afternoon. It’s a game City fans will be keeping a close eye on ahead of their Monday night game against Newcastle. Ahead of the game, Lineker made a joke about the scheduling for the last few weeks
“Huge game tomorrow (Sunday), Leeds vs West Ham,” he said on Match of the Day . “Leicester obviously play on Monday again, four Mondays on the bounce, I don’t know whether this is some sort of plan to make sure Leicester go down – a conspiracy theory there.
Pundit Jermaine Jenas then gave his thoughts on the race to stay in the Premier League, where he included an apology to Lineker
West Ham have got the Europa Conference League, they’re playing, they’ve got yourselves (Leicester) last game of the season, Leeds are going to be facing them as well,” he said. “What team David Moyes picks I don’t know but it’s looking bleak for Leicester, in my opinion, sorry.”
With eyes turning to Monday night’s clash, Lineker then made a plea to former Newcastle man Shearer, with Liverpool’s draw against Aston Villa virtually sealing Eddie Howe’s side’s place in the top four.
Lineker said: “Your guys Newcastle are pretty much, absolutely certain to be in the Champions League. Can you take it easy on Monday, just relax a little bit?
Shearer responded with: “I know how you feel, I’ve been there for the last few years
