Leeds United are planning to send Sean McGurk out on loan with the attacking midfielder still awaiting the chance to make his senior debut for the Whites.
That is according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (15/10; page 70) which claims that Daniel Farke does not have the 20-year-old on his radar for the first-team.
It may come as a surprise to some that Sean McGurk has not yet taken that next step in his Leeds career. The youngster has been such a consistent performer for the under-21s since his move from Wigan Athletic in 2021.
He has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 46 games. Nevertheless, he is yet to experience senior football more than two years after his move.
Leeds are very lucky in terms of how much depth we now have in attacking areas. Certainly, few sides can compete for quality with the quartet who started against Bristol City before the international break. And we still have Willy Gnonto to come back into the fold.
With that, players such as McGurk and Mateo Joseph are going to struggle for opportunities.
The problem for McGurk is that he has little left to prove in under-21s football. So he needs to take that next step. And if that is not going to be a first-team chance at Elland Road, then it needs to be elsewhere.
The jury is still out on whether he is going to be a success at Leeds. But if he leaves on loan, he can get a much better idea of where his development is at.
It may be that he does well enough to send a message to Farke. But at the very least, it should put him in the shop window in case Leeds decide that he would be better off moving on permanently.
