Good News Mets ex-GM proposes blockbuster deal finally sends $130 million ace to NY in

The New York Mets fell just short of the World Series in 2024. They could be aggressive in adding a star pitcher this offseason to get to the Fall Classic in 2025.

During an appearance on Baseball Night in New York for SNY, former Mets general manager, Zack Scott proposed this trade that sends Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox to New York:

  • Mets receive: left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet
  • White Sox receive: infielder/outfielder Jett Williams, infielder Ronny Mauricio, infielder Brett Baty and infielder Jesus Baez

“They should target Garrett Crochet. Impact starting pitcher with two years of control” said Scott. “To me, they’re going to have to give up a pretty big haul.”

Scott was the Mets general manager throughout the 2021 season. Williams is the Mets’ No. 2 overall prospect and Baez is the No. 14 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. Mauricio made his MLB debut in 2023 but missed all of 2024 with an ACL injury. The highlighted player going to the White Sox would be Williams.

Williams is a Top 100 prospect and would likely be needed to complete any blockbuster trade with the Mets. Meanwhile, Baty and Mauricio are players the White Sox can plug in right away. Baez, 19, hit .262 with 11 home runs in 72 games across Single-A and High-A in 2024.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale revealed that the White Sox plan to move Crochet this winter. He has club control and an All-Star selection under his belt. 2024 was Crochet’s first year as a starter. Spotrac projects Crochet to sign a six-year, $130 million deal when he hits free agency after the 2026 season.

If the Mets’ top priorities are Juan Soto and Pete Alonso, adding Crochet could be seen as a move to save money as well. With arbitration eligibility, the Mets would not have to pay him or sign him long-term. However, trading away four young players and locking him up long-term could receive some backlash from the fans.
