In a significant leadership transition, Auston Matthews has been appointed as the 26th captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, succeeding John Tavares. This marks the first time an American-born player has captained the storied franchise.

 

Matthews, 26, has been a cornerstone for the Maple Leafs since being selected first overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. His tenure with the team has been marked by remarkable achievements, including leading the NHL with 69 goals last season and amassing 107 points over 81 games. Over his eight-season career with Toronto, Matthews has accumulated 649 points (368 goals, 281 assists) in 562 games and earned seven All-Star selections.
