Nottingham Forest will reportedly refuse to loan Lewis O’Brien to Sheffield United as they instead insist on a £20m sale.
That is according to The Sun, who say Forest will not look to help out a Premier League rival with a temporary deal.
O’Brien spent the end of last season on loan in the MLS with DC United after a January loan switch to Blackburn Rovers collapsed at the last minute.
DC boss Wayne Rooney had been keen to keep the 24-year-old, whose future at the City Ground is uncertain after his £20m move from Huddersfield Town a year ago failed to pan out as hoped.
O’Brien featured 17 times and scored one goal for DC United. Forest now have a decision to make over whether he can play a part for Steve Cooper ’s side in the upcoming Premier League season. The Reds head coach has said he already has a clear idea of the make-up of his squad, but there is some leeway for players to work their way into contention.
O’Brien was named on the bench for Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt but faces a battle to get into Cooper’s team. Ryan Yates, Orel Mangala and Danilo are established in midfield with Remo Freuler and Cheikou Kouyate hoping to force their way. Forest kick-off the Premier League season at Arsenal this coming Saturday.
