The New York Mets are reportedly considering a significant trade to acquire Minnesota Twins’ ace, Pablo López, who is under a four-year, $73.5 million contract through 2027.
In this proposed deal, the Mets would send left-handed pitcher David Peterson, shortstop Jett Williams, and outfielder Drew Gilbert to the Twins.
Peterson has been a reliable part of the Mets’ rotation, while Williams and Gilbert are among the organization’s top prospects, ranked No. 2 and No. 3 respectively by MLB Pipeline.
López, 29, has established himself as a dependable starter, earning All-Star recognition and maintaining a consistent performance over recent seasons. His addition would bolster a Mets rotation that currently includes Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, and Clay Holmes.
The Mets have been active this offseason, notably signing Juan Soto to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract.
Acquiring López would further enhance their pitching staff, aiming to strengthen their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
However, parting with top prospects like Williams and Gilbert represents a significant investment in the present at the potential expense of future talent development.
The Twins, on the other hand, would gain promising young players to support their long-term strategy.
As the offseason progresses, the potential impact of this trade on both teams will be closely monitored by analysts and fans alike.
