In a high-scoring Southeastern Conference (SEC) opener at Rupp Arena, the No. 10 Kentucky Wildcats handed the No. 6 Florida Gators their first loss of the season with a 106-100 victory.
Koby Brea led the Wildcats with a career-high 23 points, sinking seven three-pointers. His sharpshooting was instrumental in Kentucky’s offensive success, as the team collectively shot 14-of-29 (48%) from beyond the arc.
The game began with Florida (13-1) taking an early lead, capitalizing on their rebounding advantage. The Gators outrebounded Kentucky 38-30, including a strong presence on the offensive glass.
However, Kentucky (12-2) responded with a decisive 16-0 run midway through the first half, sparked by Brea and Otega Oweh, who combined for 39 points. This surge shifted momentum, allowing the Wildcats to enter halftime with a 10-point lead.
Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr. delivered an impressive performance, matching his career high with 33 points, while Alijah Martin added 26 points. Despite shooting 55% from the field, the Gators struggled to contain Kentucky’s perimeter offense and failed to regain the lead in the second half.
Lamont Butler was pivotal for Kentucky, contributing 19 points, eight assists, and three steals. His defensive efforts, along with timely scoring, helped the Wildcats withstand Florida’s attempts at a comeback.
This victory marks Kentucky’s 42nd win in SEC season openers since the 1972-73 season, highlighting their historical dominance in conference play.
Looking ahead, Kentucky aims to maintain their momentum as they prepare to face the Georgia Bulldogs in their next matchup. Meanwhile, Florida will seek to rebound from this loss when they host No. 1 Tennessee, presenting another challenging test early in their SEC schedule.
The Wildcats’ ability to execute during critical stretches and their balanced scoring attack were key factors in overcoming Florida’s resilience, setting a positive tone for Kentucky as they navigate the competitive SEC landscape.
