It has been six years since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left Arsenal to join Liverpool, where he would go on to win every trophy possible, including the Premier League title and the Champions League.
- But on Saturday, in front of a packed Liverpool crowd at Anfield, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain said his final goodbyes to the club, with manager Jurgen Klopp lauding him as a ‘legend’ (Daily Mail), alongside other departees Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and James Milner. The 29-year-old was given a guard of honour by his fellow players and the Liverpool coaches (Sky Sports) following his side’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.
The midfielder wasn’t able to feature because of injury, which is probably fitting because, for most parts of his time at the club, injuries have set him back.
But that doesn’t take away those trophy-winning moments, including beating the all-dominant Manchester City to the Premier League title and securing European glory in Madrid.
For a former Arsenal player that Champions League win would have been even sweeter because it came at the expense of Tottenham.
HAS OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN LIVED UP TO EXPECTATIONS AT LIVERPOOL?
The Reds paid Arsenal £35 million for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s services (Sky Sports) and high things were expected of the 35-cap England star.
But, not since 2019, has he repped his country, which seems about right because he hasn’t either performed to earn more caps, nor has he been able to stay away from the treatment room.
It will be interesting to see what Oxlade-Chamberlain’s next move will be and whether he can secure a free transfer to a team that is already in Europe because he might have to go a level below.
