Jurgen Klopp has said three other Liverpool players were in contention to replace Jordan Henderson as captain, with Virgil van Dijk handed the armband.
German manager revealed that Andy Roberton, Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah were all in contention to become Liverpool’s next captain.

With Robertson and Salah captains at international level and Alisson one of the oldest players in the squad, it makes sense why there is some surprise over Alexander-Arnold being selected for the vice-captain role over the Liverpool trio.
However, Klopp has given his reasoning behind the new captains, with the Liverpool boss saying: “So, the thing is that the leadership group is Virgil, Trent, Robbo, Ali and Mo, and they all have, like, captain’s potential
Klopp’s plethora of leaders in the Liverpool squad no doubt gave the Anfield coach quite the headache when it came to selecting a new permanent captain to replace Henderson.
However, the German boss has arguably made the two right choices when it comes to the new skipper and vice-captain, with Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold the perfect candidates for the roles.
The pair both represent the present and the future of Liverpool, and the duo will no doubt excel in their new roles as the leaders of the Anfield giants heading into the new season
