Liverpool has received some good news on the injury front. It also acts as a reminder to Jürgen Klopp, whose defensive options look a little slim on paper.
Liverpool did not dip into the market for a center-back this summer, despite sanctioning the loan departures of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams. The emergency pairing in 2020/21, Jürgen Klopp would now need to look elsewhere if a similar injury crisis struck again.
Since then, Liverpool has at least added Ibrahima Konaté to the fold, although his injury record is not exactly reassuring. Already, he has been sidelined this season, and Joe Gomez and Joël Matip are currently holding the fort while Virgil van Dijk serves a suspension.
That pair are hardly renowned for clean injury histories either. Of the set of four at Klopp’s disposal, then, only Van Dijk can be classed as reliable in terms of availability — and he is a 32-year-old on the wrong side of a serious cruciate injury
