With Liverpool enduring a tough 2022/23 season, finishing fifth and not claiming a trophy, Schmatke has plenty of work to do if the Anfield club are to be competing for the biggest honours again.

DAZN looks at the areas of the pitch where Liverpool could address.

Goalkeeper

Boasting arguably the best keeper in world football, between the sticks is not a problem area at Liverpool but finding a competent back-up for Alisson Becker could be on this summer’s menu.

Caoimhin Kelleher is rumoured to be on the hunt for first team football and if Liverpool cash in on the Irish stopper, then that position will need to be filled.

Defence

Liverpool’s need to pursue a defender will all depend on their future plans for Trent Aleander-Arnold. The brilliant playmaker was used in a more advanced role later in the season and it was a strategy that worked well.

Jules Kounde is a versatile defender who has been linked in recent days and if the Barcelona defender is available then he’d be able to do several jobs for Liverpool.

Midfield

The key area for improvement and the one position where Schmadtke will need to put the bulk of his focus.

Liverpool’s ageing midfield let them down last season and they’ll need to strengthen adequately to return to the business end of the Premier League.

Alexis Mac Allister is heavily linked, but Liverpool will need more bodies to cope with the departures of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita.

With Thiago often on the sidelines injured, Liverpool must address this area of the pitch or next season could be a repeat of this past one.

Attack

With a frontline featuring Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz, Liverpool look well equipped in front of goal.

The exit of Roberto Firmino may prompt The Reds to bolster their squad with a cheap signing, but Liverpool will feel they have enough goals in the team
