Just Now: Barcelona announce their second signing of the summer after the weekend – report

Barcelona have been largely quiet in the ongoing summer transfer market. The club have failed to pull off any of the multiple reported player sales they had planned, and the effect is visible in their transfer activity.

The only first-team arrival the Catalans have managed to seal and announce so far is that of Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City. According to reports from Gerard Romero, the Blaugranas are set to make their second summer signature official soon.

Inigo Martinez’s move to Barcelona has been widely discussed for a long time now. The Spanish centre-back was one of the first players to be linked with the team ahead of the summer window, and his signing could be made official after the weekend.

The 32-year-old defender’s contract with Athletic Club ran out yesterday night, and he is now officially a free agent. Yet, his next destination has never been under a shadow of doubt

With Martinez’s arrival to Barcelona all but confirmed, Xavi can be assured that his defence lies in safe hands. After all, the veteran brings experience to the young defensive core and adds quality to what is already the league’s finest defence.

With Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, and Andreas Christensen all set to stay and compete next season, the 32-year-old will not be a regular starter for the team. However, the manager could not ask for a better backup player and it is safe to say that Martinez will have his fair share of contributions as the season enters the business end.

In 15 appearances for his former club in La Liga last season, the veteran scored one goal and maintained four clean sheets. Moreover, he averaged close to ten defensive actions per game including an average of 3.5 clearances.
