Rangers would be “copying Celtic’s homework” by appointing Kevin Muscat as their new manager, according to BBC Sport journalist Nick McPheat.
The Australian, who made 22 appearances for the Gers, is currently the manager of Japanese outfit Yokohama F Marinos.
Muscat succeeded Ange Postecoglou in the role, with the latter leaving the club to join Celtic in 2021, staying at Parkhead for two years.
Discussing Muscat, McPheat wrote for BBC Sport: “While appointing the Australian would perhaps give off vibes of copying Celtic’s homework – given he succeeded compatriot Ange Postecoglou in Yokohama – Rangers would be landing a manager who has won A-League and J-League titles.”
And discussing all potential candidates, McPheat wrote: “Even with the odds stacked against them, in the short term at least, the job remains an attractive proposition. It can quickly become unforgiving, though. Just ask the last two
Rangers fans are definitely having their say over who should be their next manager, but of course they will have very little impact on the final decision, with that one left to the Ibrox board.
That board have a huge decision on their hands, and they would be foolish not to listen to supporters of the Scottish club.
Of course it would prove to be a hugely unpopular decision to even draw the slightest comparison to fierce rivals Celtic, and that would definitely be the case if Muscat was appointed given his and Postecoglou’s ties to Yokohama F Marinos.
But Postecoglou had a superb time across the other side Glasgow before leaving for Tottenham in the summer, with a similar future up for grabs for Muscat at Ibrox.
Muscat even has an advantage over Postecoglou in that he knows the Gers well from his playing career, having helped the club win a domestic treble in his one season there.
