Mohamed Salah’s close friend Mamdou Eid has suggested that Jurgen Klopp is ‘belittling’ the winger and believes that he was wrongfully overlooked for the club captaincy this summer after Jordan Henderson’s departure. Instead, Virgil van Dijk was selected for the role.
Salah kickstarted his Premier League campaign on a sour note against Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season, furiously leaving the pitch after being substituted off in the 77th minute. The forward’s tantrum was not viewed as an issue by his manager as he retained his spot in the starting eleven for last weekend’s match against Bournemouth, a match in which he scored.
However, despite that, Eid has told 90min that he does not believe that his Salah is being treated well by Klopp – especially after recently not being given the captain’s armband. The Egyptian businessman explained: “Liverpool is bigger than any individual but it is strange how the manager is with him [Salah], he is the greatest leader he has and should be his captain, but they don’t use him.
“He has taken his country to the World Cup and through the toughest moments, but that is not enough for him to be captain of Liverpool. He has never shown less commitment, he is not selfish, he produces everything, every season, but I don’t think the manager has been fair to him.
“He is currently their best player and one the best in the history of the club when you look at goals scored and assists. Trying to belittle his consistent desire, work, passion and achievements is unacceptable. Salah is very humble and loves the club very much. He would never stop at that.”
Salah was criticised for his behaviour as he left the pitch against Chelsea when he angrily threw tape from his wrists on the turf before he trudged to his seat on the bench. Eid believes that his actions should be forgiven rather than overanalysed.
