JUST NOW: Kyle Lowry and the Sixers have officially agreed on a 2 year deal after the Hornets’ buyout of his contract.

A league source confirmed to The Philadelphia Inquirer on Saturday night that the Philadelphia native, who excelled at Villanova and Cardinal Dougherty High School prior to his successful NBA career, has consented to a contract buyout with the Charlotte Hornets, paving the way for him to sign with the 76ers.

Less than two weeks have passed since Lowry, a six-time All-Star with championship experience, was traded from the Miami Heat to Charlotte. However, he also shares a close relationship with Sixers coach Nick Nurse, having been a member of the Toronto Raptors from 2012 to 21 (including the 2018–19 NBA title season). Between 2009 and 2012, when Daryl Morey, the president of basketball operations for the Sixers, was the Rockets’ general manager, Lowry also played for the Houston Rockets.

This season, Lowry—who will turn 38 in March—has scored 8.2 points per game, which is his lowest total since 2008–09. Nevertheless, he continues to average four assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game in addition to his 38.5% 3-point shooting percentage. He played a role in the Heat’s unexpected run to the NBA Finals the previous year.

Despite this, the Heat executed a trade with the Hornets last week and thought Terry Rozier was an improvement over Lowry. However, Lowry does not have to be an All-Star or even a starter for the Sixers in the final stretch. In addition to providing his toughness, astute playoff background, and seasoned mentoring for recently minted All-Star guard Tyrese, he would be expected to contribute in reserve minutes.
