Scottish kid McKinstry left Leeds United earlier this year. After four years on the books with the club, his contract at Elland Road was not renewed, and he became a free agent.
Though he left the Whites a few months ago, the 21-year-old still doesn’t have a club. However, it has now surfaced that his services are being sought after.
According to Anthony Joseph, a reporter for Sky Sports, several Scottish Championship teams are interested in signing him. He would also like to remain in his own country after his time spent playing for Leeds United in England.
McKinstry is a versatile midfielder who can play on the wing or in the middle. With Leeds United, he played primarily for the U21s and U18s, spending just two games with the main team. He may go back to his previous team, Mothlerwel, where he was on loan last season. It appears that he is considering a stay in Scotland.
Starting afresh
McKinstry arrived at Leeds United in the summer of 2019, signing as a promising young player from Motherwell. It would have been hoped that he could develop well and force his way into first-team football but as it went, he wasn’t able to break through with the Whites.
At just 21 years old, he still has plenty of time to maximize the promise that first earned him a transfer to Leeds. He has good Scottish Premiership experience.
Given McKinstry’s versatility, any club would benefit from having him, therefore it’s strange that the EFL hasn’t expressed interest in him yet. But since he prefers to stay in Scotland, it might not be long until he returns to the game.
