Scotland’s placement at Euro 2024 was decided without the squad kicking a ball, therefore Liam Cooper will be celebrating with his international teammates. The Leeds United defender was not used as a substitute as Steve Clarke’s team lost to a contentious opponent 2-0 in Spain on Thursday. Scott McTominay’s opening goal was overturned after a VAR review.
Three days later, Spain narrowly defeated Norway, and now both nations have secured spots in the competition for next summer. On Sunday, Gavi scored the game’s lone goal, and while Scotland is now behind Spain on goal differential, Norway can no longer pass either country in Group A with just one game left.
In a statement to the media upon the confirmation of qualification, Clarke said: “I would like to congratulate the players for their efforts in qualifying for back-to-back tournaments. The fact that they have qualified for consecutive Euros after more than 20 years is incredible and a credit to their diligence, though I’m not sure they will yet completely understand the magnitude of their accomplishment.
