It’s not a difficult summer for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The German may have seen two quality midfielders arrive in the form of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, but with the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Naby Keita leaving the club, his midfield options have been decreased and fixing that issue has been problematic.
Liverpool thought they had a deal for Moises Caicedo done, until Chelsea beat them to the Brighton and Hove Albion star. And it was the exact same story with Romeo Lavia, as the Blues acquired Liverpool’s number one and two midfield targets.
The lack of midfield options looked to be an issue for the Reds in their opening game against Chelsea, and while a 3-1 win at home to Bournemouth may have put a gloss on things, Klopp knows he still has a major issue to fix. The Reds were hoping that could be fixed before they travel to St James’ Park this weekend, with Klopp hoping for a major transfer boost ahead of the Sunday afternoon kick-off in Necwastle.
That looks like it now won’t be happening with Liverpool set to be beaten once again to their latest target. The Reds wanted to bring in Wolves star Matheus Nunes, a player who has been on their radar for some time. Having almost made a move to take the Portuguese star last summer before his move to Wolves, the Merseyside club were all set to try lure the player to Anfield a year later, but have now seen Manchester City swoop in with a deal that takes the player to the treble winners now expected to go through.
It’s the latest transfer blow for Klopp and the Reds, who need reinforcements and were hoping for a big lift for everyone at the club before their trip to the north east.
