Manchester City are monitoring former Liverpool target Evan Ferguson ahead of a possible move.
Ferguson has been one of the early stars of the Premier League season. Following on from an impressive breakout year with Brighton last year, the Irishman has begun the campaign in style.
A hat-trick against Newcastle on Saturday made it four goals in four games for Ferguson. And according to The i, this has led to some big fish circling for a transfer.
They claim that Man City head a ‘clutch of elite clubs’ who want to sign the 18-year-old. Named as a ‘potential £150m star,’ Ferguson reportedly has the admiration of ‘nearly every one’ of the Premier League’s top teams.
But it seems as though City may well be leading the race. Ominously, it claims that rather than being seen as a successor to Erling Haaland, Pep Guardiola would be looking to bring in Ferguson as a partner for the Norwegian.
City keeping an eye on Ferguson
There should be great caution exercised when proclaiming 18-year-old’s to be £150m players in the making.
Ferguson looks a prospect, that much can’t be denied, but he still has just 12 Premier League starts to his name. Granted, the Ireland international has bagged 10 goals in that time, and really does appear to be one heck of a striker. But there’s a long way to go.
If City do bring him in in the near future though, he’ll surely make those steps very quickly indeed.
Guardiola remains one of the absolute best in the business at developing and improving players, and it’s scary to think what Ferguson could become under his leadership.
Had things been different, the Brighton man could already have had an elite coach watching over his progress.
As GOAL reported in January, Ferguson actually had the chance to join Liverpool when leaving Bohemians in 2020. However, unconvinced by the opportunities on offer to him at Anfield, he opted for Brighton instead.
Some may think that’s fair enough, and has since been vindicated. But Ferguson would have got his chance at Liverpool, there are many examples of that. It remains to be seen whether the Reds try again for one that got away. If they do not – or even if they do – it seems that City will.
