JUST NOW: Steve Cooper of Nottingham Forest fired the maneger in order to take a chance on a crucial player

Sabri Lamouchi has been overlooked for the QPR job, four years after he was handed the chance to take over at Nottingham Forest. The R’s appointed a new manager last night, with Marti Cifuentes getting the nod ahead of Lamouchi and Neil Warnock.

It was TalkSPORT who claimed that the Frenchman was on the radar at QPR over the weekend. Lamouchi has been without work since leaving Cardiff City at the end of last season and previously he spent a season and a bit with Forest.

The 51-year-old managed to put Forest back on the map. However, he saw his team collapse in emphatic style and miss out on the play-offs after spending half of the season in the top six.

Lamouchi overlooked for QPR job

The experienced manager would be a decent appointment for a Championship club looking for a firefighter and that’s exactly what QPR need. Gareth Ainsworth was sacked over the weekend after overseeing a disastrous run of six games without a victory.

Cifuentes has work to do and it’s been a remarkable slide down the Championship over the last 12 months. It’s almost a year to the day since QPR were sitting pretty at the top of the division under Michael Beale’s management.

Lamouchi only spent six months at Cardiff during the second half of last season. He got the job based on what he’d achieved with Forest and managed to keep the Bluebirds in the Championship.

Forest fans will always have time for Lamouchi

The respectable Lamouchi came to Forest when fan morale was on the floor after a pretty miserable spell under Martin O’Neill. Before that Aitor Karanka had also risked the wrath of the fan base too.

Lamouchi said the right things and until COVID-19 ravaged the season, he also did plenty of right things too. He had Forest comfortably in the play-off places and although things went south behind closed doors, he did put a lot of effort in at the club.

Lamouchi will likely be back at work soon. On this occasion, however, the man who finished with a 36% win ratio at Forest will have to wonder what might have been had he got the QPR gig.
