Liverpool have been linked with American billionaires for a potential takeover as current owners Fenway Sports Group put the club for sale.
The Merseyside club was put up on the market for sale by the owners FSG last November. However, it was still unclear whether the sale of the club was going to be full or partial.
The company headed by Josh Harris and David Blitzer were thinking of buying Chelsea a year ago. When the UK government sanctioned Roman Abramovich due to Russia’s Ukraine invasion, they considered buying the London Club.
But Todd Boehly-led consortium snatched the deal to buy the Blues worth a total of £4.25M.
Now Harris has completed a takeover in NHL. He has officially signed off a deal to purchase the NHL side Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder for a price tag of £4.71B ($6.05B).
This deal made Washington Commanders the most expensive sports team in the world surpassing the purchase of the Denver Broncos for £3.62 billion ($4.65 billion) in August 2022. After completing the deal Harris said
This franchise is part of who I am, and who I’ve become as a person. But being a fan is not enough.
To be successful, we understand that we need to win championships, have a positive impact on the community and have great, incredible memories and experiences for our fan base, much as I had as a youth growing up in Washington.
To our team and our incredible fan base in Washington, a new era of Washington football is here. It’s time to get to work.
American takeover happening soon as Liverpool are up for sale
While speaking to the Boston Sports Journal about the sale situation, principal owner John Henry said,
“Yes. I know there has been a lot of conversation and quotes about LFC but I keep to the facts: we merely formalized an ongoing process.
Will we be in England forever? No. Are we selling LFC? No.
Are talking with investors about LFC? Yes. Will something happen there? I believe so, but it won’t be a sale.
Have we sold anything in the past 20+ years?”
However, FSG are still open to inviting fresh investors for LFC. Earlier this year, Henry confirmed that the Boston-based group has been in talks with potential parties.
If HBSE really takeover as the new owners, then the fans can expect to see some more investments in the club as supposed to current owners FSG.
