Liverpool just got a reminder that it already has another center-back option on the books. The Saudis’ push for Mohamed Salah will not relent any time soon.
Liverpool is not naïve enough to think the Mohamed Salah saga is over. In fact, it might only just be beginning.
It may have held the cards this summer, with Salah still having two years left to run on his contract, but Liverpool will be more vulnerable to approaches in future transfer windows. It remains to be seen whether FSG even tries to extend the Egyptian’s terms, with no possibility of getting anywhere near the money on offer in Saudi Arabia.
Assuming no new Liverpool deal is forthcoming, it more or less seems like a matter of whether Liverpool sells in January or holds on until the following summer. The latter scenario still appears more likely — one benefit of Saudi Arabia’s dogged chase is that the Reds can be confident that the offer will still be on the table a year from now — but it’s hard to shake the feeling that this is Salah’s swansong at Anfield.
