According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, former Phillies closer Ken Giles will be joining the Atlanta Braves for Spring Training. The 33-year-old Giles has missed two of the previous three seasons due to injury. Giles last took the mound in 2022, when he pitched for the Seattle Mariners for just 4 1/3 innings. In his five appearances, he did not allow an earned run. After being selected by the Phillies in the seventh round of the 2011 MLB Draft, Giles began his professional career with the team. On June 12, 2014, the 23-year-old righty made his debut.

It was evident from his first two seasons with Philadelphia that he had a long career ahead of him. Giles pitched 45 2/3 innings with a 1.18 ERA in his rookie campaign. 64 strikeouts and a fourth-place result in the National League Rookie of the Year voting were part of that. His career’s second season was equally outstanding, with a 1.80 ERA over 70 innings pitched. Giles gave up just two home runs while striking out 87 batters. It will be intriguing to observe how he performs during Spring Training given the possibility of being in the Braves bullpen. Atlanta is giving him this chance because they think he still has something in the tank. An invitation to an MLB camp is a small matter.
He would get $1.75 million if he were to make the big league roster. This might end up being a minor pickup for a Braves team that is in the running for the pennant during the regular season.
