Kuss Commits to Volta a Catalunya 2025: “I Want to Help Vingegaard and Yates”

Sepp Kuss has confirmed his participation in the 2025 Volta a Catalunya, marking an important step in his preparation for the Tour de France as he continues to embrace his role as a key support rider for Jonas Vingegaard and Simon Yates.

The American climber, a crucial figure in Team Visma-Lease a Bike, expressed his excitement about racing in Catalunya, a region that has long been a favored battleground for climbers. With a strong field expected at the week-long WorldTour race, Kuss sees it as a valuable test ahead of the Tour de France.

“I love racing in Catalunya, and this year it will be an important part of my buildup. I want to be in the best shape possible to help Jonas and Simon, so this race is a great opportunity to fine-tune my form,” said Kuss.

A Crucial Test Before the Tour

With the Grand Départ of the 2025 Tour de France looming in July, Kuss’ participation in the Volta a Catalunya signals Visma’s strategy to ensure their climbing squad is in peak condition. The Dutch team will rely heavily on Kuss in the high mountains, where he has repeatedly proven to be one of the strongest domestiques in the peloton.

Kuss played a pivotal role in supporting Vingegaard during his Tour de France victories and was instrumental in Visma’s dominance at the 2023 Vuelta a España, where he ultimately claimed the overall victory. Now, with Yates joining the squad, Kuss will have another leader to work for as Visma looks to maintain its status as the world’s top stage racing team.

Stacked Field at Volta a Catalunya

The 2025 Volta a Catalunya, set to take place in March, will feature a challenging route with multiple high-altitude summit finishes and fast-paced racing. Kuss will likely be tasked with setting up Vingegaard and Yates for success in the general classification while testing his own climbing legs against the likes of Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, and Primož Roglič, who are also expected to take part.

While Kuss himself is more than capable of riding for GC, his main focus remains on preparation for the Tour. His ability to dictate the pace in the mountains and neutralize attacks will be key for Visma’s ambitions, both in Catalunya and later in France.

A Strong Lead-Up to July

With the Tour de France as the ultimate goal, Kuss’ participation in Catalunya follows Visma’s broader plan of refining their tactics and teamwork. The race will also offer a chance to assess Yates’ integration into the squad, as the British climber looks to play a critical role in Visma’s three-pronged attack at the Tour.

As the 2025 season unfolds, Kuss remains one of the most valuable team players in modern cycling. And if his performances in Catalunya are anything to go by, Visma’s rivals will have plenty to worry about when July rolls around.
