If the Los Angeles Lakers want to pair LeBron James and Anthony Davis with a third star, they have some work to do. Donovan Mitchell, the star player for the Cleveland Cavaliers, is still being linked to Los Angeles. With all eyes on a possible extension for the five-time All-Star, it is unclear if the Cavaliers are willing to trade Mitchell in the upcoming months. Bleacher Report developed a trading concept.
Los Angeles trades two first-round picks (2029, 2031), Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and a 2026 first-round pick to Cleveland. Mitchell leaves for the Lakers in exchange to maybe play alongside James and Davis. Reaves’ transfer to Los Angeles has been resisted, but landing a player like Mitchell is difficult to argue with.
Let’s dive into whether this trade idea works for either the Cavaliers or Lakers.
Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes makes the argument that Mitchell has some control over his trade destination. Few teams are going to want to give up a lot of assets for Mitchell without assurance that the guard will sign a contract extension.
Mitchell technically still has two seasons remaining on a five-year, $163 million contract. The star has a player option in 2025 that would allow Mitchell to hit free agency after the 2024-25 season.
