Lakers officially announced the signing of the exciting young guard that earlier in the season torched Los Angeles.

Over the past month, the Los Angeles Lakers have been in disarray and are looking for explanations everywhere they look. The Lakers have signed two different players in the past week due to the team’s struggles with injuries and need for increased output from the two-way contract spots.

First, forward Alex Fudge was waived by the team, and Dylan Windler was signed to a two-way contract. Skylar Mays, who had been waived by the Blazers earlier in the week, was then signed by Los Angeles to a two-way contract. In order to make room for Mays, D’Moi Hodge was waived.

It’s crucial to avoid exaggerating the significance of these two-way signs. It is unlikely that these individuals will abruptly turn things around for the Lakers. Having said that,  Lakers supporters witnessed Mays’ truly entertaining potential up close earlier in the season when the Lakers played the Blazers.

Earlier in the season, Skylar Mays burned the Lakers.
To be fair, Mays’s great performances did not have any bearing on the outcome because the Lakers defeated the Blazers twice in a single week while he was in the lineup. Nevertheless, his performances in those two games cannot be disregarded, and the Lakers’ front office clearly remembered.

In the two games, Mays totaled 30 points, 20 assists, and 9 rebounds. He made 0–4 three-pointers in one game and 3–7 in the other. In the two games in November, his overall field goal percentage was 48.1%.

Does this imply that the player the Lakers acquire will have an average of 15 points, 10 assists, and 4.5 rebounds?

Not at all. However, they at least have a two-way player who can fill in and organize a functional night for the team when they are short-handed. The Lakers did not have Fudge or Hodge for that.

It’s evident that the Lakers preferred to have someone in the building who could actually play for the NBA team when necessary rather than chasing Fudge or Hodge as long-term developmental pieces. The team decided to bring in both Windler and Mays because of this, with Mays being the more exciting player.
