Alex Golesh Hints at a Change, But Tennessee’s Problems Run Deeper.

Former Tennessee offensive coordinator Alex Golesh recently made a pointed remark that seemed directed at Vols athletic director Danny White. While his suggestion may have merit, it does little to address the broader issues facing Tennessee football.

Golesh, now the head coach at South Florida, played a key role in Tennessee’s offensive success under Josh Heupel in 2021 and 2022. His system helped the Vols become one of the most explosive teams in the country, and his departure was certainly felt in Knoxville. With Tennessee’s offense struggling at times last season, Golesh’s comment—whether about coaching philosophy, roster management, or administrative support—raises the question: Does Tennessee miss him?

While some Vols fans might be quick to point fingers at the current coaching staff, the reality is that Tennessee’s struggles go beyond just play-calling. The Vols face issues with roster turnover, NIL dynamics, and inconsistent quarterback play, all of which have contributed to their recent woes.

Even if Golesh were still in Knoxville, Tennessee would still be dealing with challenges on both sides of the ball. Recruiting battles in the SEC have only intensified, and Heupel is still working to build depth across the roster. Meanwhile, the defense—though improved—hasn’t always been able to match the high expectations set by the offense.

Ultimately, while Golesh’s remarks may have stirred conversation, the Vols’ path forward depends on more than just one person or one system. For Tennessee to take the next step, Heupel and his staff must navigate the complexities of the modern college football landscape, from recruiting to player development to in-game adjustments.

For now, Vol Nation can only hope that the right changes are made—not just the ones hinted at by a former Coach.
