Willy Gnonto is now looking to leave Leeds United in the January transfer window, according to Napoli Calcio Live.
The Italian news outlet reported on Thursday (September 14) that Gnonto, 19, wants to leave Elland Road to play in a “major” league, with clubs in Serie A keen on signing him.
It is understood that Fiorentina and Sassuolo are two of the clubs that are in pursuit of Gnonto, who handed in a transfer request in the summer in order to force through a move to Everton.
After the drama of the summer, it would be a big shock if Gnonto does a U-turn on his U-turn and goes back to trying to force a move away from Elland Road.
He seemed to be pushing quite hard to join cash-strapped and crisis-ridden Everton in the summer, such was his desire to play in the Premier League.
However, he ended up staying put at Elland Road and has still managed to earn a call-up for the Italy national team in the most recent international break.
Sure, going back to Italy and playing in Serie A for Fiorentina and Sassuolo would probably keep him on Luciano Spalletti’s radar a bit better than it would in the Championship at Leeds.
However, he’s not guaranteed to be a star man here, and if he stays at Elland Road for at least until the end of the season, he could play a role in getting us back to the top flight.
Will Gnonto quit Leeds in January? We doubt it at this point.
