Life after Jurgen Klopp could have gone in a completely different direction for Liverpool.
Arne Slot has already confirmed that he will be taking over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, even though Liverpool are yet to officially announce his arrival on the eve of the final day of the Premier League season, but only after a very late change in plans. The Reds will bid farewell to their legendary German boss at home to Wolves on Sunday, before embarking on a new era under Feyenoord head coach Slot.
Slot was not always considered the favourite to succeed Klopp, with Xabi Alonso initially instilled as the likeliest option. The Bayer Leverkusen boss quickly turned down the chance of a Merseyside return as he went in search of an unprecedented unbeaten season with the Bundesliga club.
Attention swiftly turned to Sporting’s Ruben Amorim following a successful four years in charge of the Portuguese giants, who appeared in line for the Liverpool job. But instead, Reds chief Michael Edwards decided to go in another direction with Slot, though the reason has since emerged for Amorim’s snub.
CaughtOffside claim that a deal was in place for Amorim to head to Anfield only for the financial goalposts to be moved at the final hurdle. Contracts were ready to be signed, with Sporting set to receive £8.5million as part of a compensation package.
But Sporting president Frederico Varandas was said to have changed his mind at the very last minute, demanding twice as much for their promising head coach. Liverpool were not willing to re-negotiate though and called an end to discussions, leaving Amorim disappointed as he was looking forward to the prospect of replacing Klopp.

Liverpool soon moved on to Slot, having been able to reach an agreement with Feyenoord, as Amorim looked to West Ham in the hope of securing a place in the Premier League next season.
He flew to London as the Hammers considered options to replace David Moyes, though ultimately decided on former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui according to various reports.

“I can confirm that I will become the trainer there (Liverpool) next year,” Slot said in his Friday press conference. “Until now I was not thinking about this being the buildup to my last match, but that starts coming now.
“At the beginning of the week you are thinking about training and those kind of things. But the feeling gets stronger now. That is why I’m a little bit late now (for the press conference) because I wanted to say goodbye to some people personally and take time for them, more than just shaking hands.
“So yeah, the feeling grows. I understand that good results help, but it is very nice to feel that people really are thinking it’s a pity that I’m leaving.”
