Liverpool have now moved on from signing £43m player, they don’t think he’s leaving

Liverpool decided to step back from their pursuit of Ryan Gravenberch as they don’t think he’s leaving Bayern Munich.

Gravenberch has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer. As per numerous reports, the Reds even met with his agents as they tried to lay the groundwork on a deal.

But Bayern were always adamant that the 21-year-old wouldn’t be sold after just one year in Munich. And speaking to 90min’s Talking Transfers Podcast yesterday, journalist Graeme Bailey confirmed that this is still the case, leaving Liverpool to walk away.

They’ve [Liverpool] looked around,” said Bailey, when discussing the Reds’ hunt for another midfielder.

“Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, Ryan Gravenberch, who probably looks like he’s staying now at Bayern, which is one reason Liverpool have moved off him, and [Romeo] Lavia as well.

Liverpool leave Gravenberch chase
Even if Bayern had allowed Gravenberch to leave this summer, we’re still not sure he’d have been a top target for Liverpool.

He’s been in the conversation plenty, but things never progressed beyond initial talks. His price-tag was mooted to be around £43m. But it doesn’t appear as though the Reds ever really tested the German champions with an offer of any kind.

As a result, it’s easy to see the Dutchman as merely a back-up to other, more important targets.

So, who was the alternative? Well, as it was with Thuram, it seems likely that Liverpool opted for Dominik Szoboszlai over Gravenberch. The three players are all tall, more box-to-box type midfielders.

As for Manu Kone, he was potentially an option instead of current top target Romeo Lavia.

But with Kone injured at the U21 European Championships earlier this summer, it seems as though Lavia has won that one, for now.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool do come back for Kone, or indeed Gravenberch, if things go South with them for the Belgian. But for now, we can cross both names – and Thuram – off the list.
