Liverpool is edging closer to the signing of a midfield player who will give exactly what Jürgen Klopp needs and might finally be able to replace Philippe Coutinho.

NOTHING WILL CHANGE” | KLOPP ON JAMES MILNER & ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER

Jürgen Klopp’s going to be embarking on a midfield revolution at Liverpool this summer. The Reds need a full revamp and with three midfielders already confirmed to be leaving at the end of the season, radical changes are already underway at Anfield.

  1. One of the leaders of that new revolution is looking likely to be a World Cup-winning Argentine in Alexis Mac Allister. According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool has already agreed personal terms with the player and while the deal is not done yet there are only a few details left. One of the best midfielders in the Premier League this season, Mac Allister would be a huge coup to lead Liverpool’s midfield revival. He is only 24 years old, with time to develop and plenty of years left at the top of his game.

Having dominated the World Cup final for Argentina against an impressive array of midfielders in the French national team, Mac Allister definitely has the skillset to be the kind of midfielder Liverpool Not only is he a box-to-box midfielder with plenty of energy who can give Liverpool a new dynamism, but he’s also got an element Klopp hasn’t had in his midfield for years. Not since Philippe Coutinho has Liverpool had a midfielder who has been as competent as Mac Allister this season in terms of being a goal threat

For Brighton this season, Mac Allister has averaged 2.51 shots per 90 in all competitions this season. That’s the most out of any Brighton midfielders but also the most out of any Liverpool midfielder as well (who have played at least 10 lots of 90 minutes, as per FBref) with the closest being Harvey Elliott who averages 1.87 shots per 90.

It’s important to assert as well that Mac Allister is not taking just shots on a whim. Sometimes taking a high volume of shots can be the sign of a wasteful player. However, the quality of the location of his shots measured by his expected goals is also really high with an average of 0.23 xG per 90 which ranks him in the 96th percentile among his positional peers.

Again the closest from Liverpool’s midfield options to match that xG is Elliott, but he only averages 0.14.

With 10 goals this season in the Premier League, Mac Allister

has also achieved something no Liverpool midfielder has done since Coutinho in the 2016/17 Premier League season when he scored 13 goals.
