Liverpool and West Ham have been made aware of Barcelona’s interest in one of their transfer targets as a deal worth up to £90m could be in the works.
Both Jurgen Klopp and David Moyes are keen to improve upon their midfield options this summer. With Liverpool looking to overhaul the middle of the pitch, they have been linked with several stars of late.
The Hammers are also in the market for a midfielder as they are seeking out a replacement for Declan Rice.
Fulham’s Joao Palhinha has been a target for both clubs, although Barcelona have now entered the race to sign the 27-year-old.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Barcelona see Palhinha as an ideal replacement for the outgoing Sergio Busquets.
Earlier this week, Fulham told West Ham they will have to spend £90m in order to land the Portuguese midfielder this summer.
Marco Silva’s side are in a strong position to dictate Palhinha’s value as he is contracted with the club until 2027. Last season he was one of Fulham’s standout players.
The 27-year-old started in 35 league matches and was one of Fulham’s most consistent performers. He’s certainly not shy of getting stuck in as he racked up 14 yellow cards in the league alone.
Winning an average of 4.2 tackles per 90 in the Premier League, it’s easy to see why so many top clubs are chasing his signature.
Liverpool have alternative options
While Palhinha would be a great addition to Liverpool’s midfield, Jurgen Klopp does have some alternative targets in mind this summer.
The Reds have also been linked with Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella. Recent reports have even claimed that Klopp’s side are preparing a £68m offer to tempt him to Anfield.
While Inter won’t be willing to sell Barella on the cheap, he could prove to be a cheaper alternative to Fulham’s Palhinha.
Fabrizio Romano recently admitted that a deal for Palhinha could be tough to pull off this summer, especially given Fulham’s high asking price.
West Ham are preparing their first approach for João Palhinha,” Romano explained. “Not an easy deal with Fulham but he’s top of the list for West Ham to replace Declan Rice.”
Palhinha himself has admitted to being happy at Craven Cottage, although a move to Barcelona would be tough to resist.
You know the affection I have for Sporting,” Palhinha explained. “It’s something that has always marked me and will always mark me.
“Right now I’m very happy here [at Fulham] and I want to stay here. I think [the Premier League]suits my football.
Barcelona could look to prize the Fulham midfielder away, although whether they would be able to spend £90m on him is another matter entirely.
