Romano: Liverpool will remain “aware” of the midfielder’s situation, hopefully the club will change position.
Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on what he knows about Liverpool’s continued interest in Nicolò Barella.
The Italian midfielder has been linked with a possible move to the Reds, with a group of Inter Milan ultras even taking to Instagram to send a speakerphone message about the 26-year-old.
The same report said the Nerazzurri would need an offer of around €90m to sell the player, although the Anfield side could hope this would be lowered later in the summer.
In his exclusive Substack column for , Romano outlined: “Liverpool are aware of the Nicolo Barella situation. They are aware that Inter want to keep Barella in principle and have no intention of letting him go.
“The recently reported £50m figure is definitely not enough to get Barella. Should this position change later in the window, Liverpool will continue to value Barella, but now also focus on Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone as midfield priorities.”
Given that Inter are reportedly seeking at least £77m for Barella, it is clear they are keen to dissuade affected clubs from pursuing the midfielder.
As Romano points out, Liverpool can hope that, as the summer progresses, the Champions League runners-up can change their asking price for the 26-year-old, even if they are in a strong position given that they have another. three years into his contract.
With Thuram and Kone, as well as Gabri Veiga also featured prominently on the Reds’ transfer radar, those three could be top of the list for Jorg Schmadtke and company, with the club also extending its hand for Italy international which allowed those chases to end one way or another. The patience of the LFC hierarchy would be understandable in this regard, although there must be a good balance between waiting in the hope of negotiating a better deal or going too slowly and allowing suitors like Newcastle to sneak in and sign it.
Barella’s name is likely to remain a high-profile name in Liverpool transfer news for much longer into the summer.
