Liverpool transfer roundup: Arsenal keen on Reds target after Samuel Chukwueze oath
Liverpool have already made a major signing this summer, spending £35million on Alexis Mac Allister, but Jurgen Klopp’s side are expected to be active in the transfer market.
Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League and face a major rebuild this summer.
There has already been plenty of movement at Anfield with James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino all leaving the club on free transfers. Alexis Mac Allister, meanwhile, is Liverpool’s first summer signing after joining Brighton for £35million. Many more new signings are expected in the coming months as Jürgen Klopp looks to strengthen his squad, with Liverpool not expected to count against them in the Europa League. With that in mind, here are some of the key transfer conversations to emerge from Anfield.
Both Liverpool and Manchester United have long been credited with interest in Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, but Arsenal are looking to play a trick on their Premier League rivals.
According to Athletic, Arsenal have made a £30m offer for the Dutch international. However, they remain £20m short of Ajax’s £50m asking price, with the 22-year-old still having two years left on his current contract. The report states that “there is optimism that a compromise can be reached” and that Timber has already agreed personal terms with the Gunners.
Timber admitted in April that he was likely to leave this summer, telling De Telegraaf: “There is a lot of concrete interest and I have made arrangements with Ajax. Last year Ajax m asked to stay at least one more season to extend my contract. As a club boy, I did it with love and after the season we agreed to review the situation.”
Villarreal chairman Fernando Roig has admitted winger Samuel Chukwueze could be sold this summer, with Liverpool also reportedly showing an interest but vowing not to “undermine” him, even with just one year remaining on his contract.
“It’s true that he is looking forward to playing for a big club in Europe or in the Premier League,” Roig told Spanish magazine AS. If that option presented itself, we would sit down and discuss it. However, it must be checked whether a favorable offer is received for all three parties.
“In this case, no offer has arrived yet. We are aware that if something very good does not materialize, he will stay. Who cares if he stays for a year.” To break even, we have to sell. But let it be clear that we are in no hurry. We won’t cut anyone.”
