Cody Gakpo has been filmed distributing food to children in his father’s home country of Togo.
A clip of the Liverpool and Netherlands
forward was shown on TikTok taking a break in the west African country where some of his family still reside.
Gakpo had previously expressed his desire to travel to Togo in 2019, but a busy schedule and the COVID pandemic stopped him from doing so until now.
Speaking to Elf Voetbal at the time, the 24-year-old said: “My older brother has been to Togo, just like my younger brother. Just not me yet.
A visit to Togo is still very high on my bucket list. But [finding] the time… It is difficult for a footballer, especially for an international, to plan a longer holiday.
“I’d like to go. Maybe skip Ibiza in the summer, haha.”
Well with Gakpo’s season over following the Netherlands’ Nations League campaign, he’s managed to make the trip despite a busy schedule as a key player for both the Reds and the Oranje.
The Togo Football Association contacted Gakpo about playing for his paternal country four years ago while he was at PSV Eindhoven, but he stuck with the Netherlands.
He’s since become a key player for his country, scoring in all three group games at the 2022 World Cup, helping him land a £37million move to Liverpool in the January transfer window.
The same can be said at Anfield, where Gakpo has quickly become a Jurgen Klopp favourite, registering seven goals and two assists in 21 Premier League appearances.
