Liverpool have pulled out of the race to sign Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount with Manchester United nearing a deal for the England international
Jurgen Klopp
has made strengthening his midfield a priority this summer and Alexis Mac Allister has already arrived from Brighton.
Mount is considered a more attack-minded midfielder and Klopp is keen to inject more energy into the centre of his team.
However, after registering their interest in the player, the Athletic say Liverpool have now cooled their pursuit.
That’s in part down to Chelsea’s £70m valuation of Mount, who has just a year left on his deal.
That would be almost double what Brighton have charged for Mac Allister.
Manchester United are leading the race to sign Mount and Liverpool’s decision is influenced by the fact he’s keen on a move to Old Trafford over Anfield.
Erik ten Hag wants to sign a younger upgrade on Christian Eriksen but United won’t meet Chelsea’s asking price.
Instead, the Red Devils will test the water with a bid of around £50m for the 24-year-old.
