The New York Mets dropped just their second Grapefruit League game on Thursday, under the Florida sky. There were just two extra-base hits by either team in the 2-1 loss. The two runs the Houston Astros would score were accounted for by two early runs against Mets starter Jose Quintana. It would take until the ninth inning for the Mets to score.
The Mets’ earlier-day loss of one of their competitors for the fifth starting place was more significant than the result on the field. Max Kranick, who made one appearance this spring and looked good, will start the season on the IL.
Kranick’s chances of making the squad were never good. It was made feasible by the Kodai Senga injury, but he was still at the back of the pack due to his lack of lower league alternatives and stats that were similar to some of the others. Regarding starting pitching depth, the Mets have been lingering in the free agent market for a while. They did, in fact, take action in reaction to this injury, albeit a lot smaller one than we might have predicted.
Greater than the final result on the field, earlier in the day the Mets lost one of their candidates for the fifth starting place. Max Kranick will start the season on the IL after making one appearance this spring and looking good.
It was always unlikely that Kranick would make the squad. Though his lack of lower league alternatives and stats similar to some of the others had him in the back of the pack, the injury to Kodai Senga made it conceivable. The Mets have been waiting for starting pitching depth on the free agent market for a while. They actually did go out and make a move in response to this injury, albeit a far smaller one than we might have predicted.
