The departure of Tyler Adams to Bournemouth has kick-started what we now expect to be a very busy closure to a transfer window that started with a great deal of concern for Leeds United. The exit of the USA international brought in £20m in transfer fees for Leeds, but much more than that, it cleared the way for the rebuild under new manager Daniel Farke.
In a key week for the manager and 49ers Enterprises, the club sold their prized asset, got a significant cash injection and cleared up the issues with Wilifried Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra, with both now seemingly all set to stay at Elland Road beyond this week.
Joel Piroe’s arrival on a £10m deal from Swansea City proved to be the icing on a very tasty cake. If that was enough, three points at Championship leaders Ipswich Town and four goals served to improve the mood even further at the club.
Now a key week lies ahead. It’s one which could bring with it a number of notable deals as Farke’s Leeds line-up takes on a significantly different look. Leeds will not sign all the players linked, and they may spring a surprise with a deal unknown right now, but we’re having a bit of fun playing fantasy football here as we take a look at the players linked and how they could fit into the new line-up.
With any talk of an Illan Meslier departure long silence, and with Karl Darlow arriving from Newcastle United, the goalkeeping department looks set and with the Frenchman the number one choice. Playing directly ahead of Meslier, there is still work to be done. Sam Byram and Junior Firpo’s injuries could mean a new left-back arrives and there’s even less certainty about the right side
Former Middlesbrough star and current unwanted Tottenham Hotspur player Djed Spence has been linked with a switch, with his presence at right-back alongside Luke Ayling giving Leeds more strength in that area.
Leeds have already made a significant investment to add Etahn Ampadu to their midfield and have Archie Gray showcasing his undoubted talent in the centre of the pitch. However, Gray needs nurturing, not overplaying in his first proper season and Farke wants not just extra options but quality to add in there.
Nottingham Forest’s Lewis O’Brien has long been linked with the club and the 24-year-old would fit the bill for Leeds, as does another young midfielder with international experience, Japanese star Ao Tanaka. The Whites are said to be in conversation about bringing in the Bundesliga 2 player. It’s unlikely Tanaka would trouble the starting XI straight away, not when Leeds are also looking at players like German international Nadiem Amiri and Finland’s Glen Kamara.
A combination of Ampadu and Kamara, with Amiri playing in front of the pair is very exciting, even more so with players like O’Brien, Tanaka and Gray to feature off the bench or even in rotation in a busy week such as the one ahead.

Gnonto and Sinisterra staying is almost like two new additions and certainly gives Farke a tough selection choice out wide in attack, even more so if the Whites complete a deal for Ghana international Joseph Paintsil. The 25-year-old was a firm target when talk of Sinisterra and Gnonto leaving was very real. Leeds still haven’t placed Jack Harrison and Paintsil could be that man to give an already impressive attacking line-up, even more stature.
