Medicals Booked: Liverpool Set to sign a central defender to replace their ex-star bid £90million and set out medicals

Liverpool’s sign a central defender could see them rekindle their interest in Torino’s Perr Schuurs, according to one report.

Football Insider reports that the Dutch defender could come back on to the radar for Liverpool in the final weeks of the transfer window.

It is said that Schuurs is seen as a ‘realistically priced’ option and is valued at around £90m by Torino.

In addition, Football Insider cites a ‘well-placed’ source who claims that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is a ‘big fan’ of his fellow Dutchman, who is yet to make his senior debut for the Netherlands despite being called up for the UEFA Nations League clashes against Poland and Italy in September 2020.

Liverpool have been on the lookout for a left-sided central defender since the start of the summer transfer window but have so far failed to make progress with a signing.

Micky van de Ven and Josko Gvardiol were reliably linked with the Reds, but the pair have secured moves to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, respectively. Levi Colwill and Goncalo Incacio, on the other hand, have signed contract extensions with their current clubs, leaving Liverpool short of options in that position.

Schuurs’ potential signing would certainly meet a lot of the Liverpool transfer committee’s criteria. He’s just 23, 6ft 3in tall, often plays in a back three and has previously been compared to Van Dijk. He also comes with a modest asking price of around £30m, making the deal likely straightforward to complete even at this stage of the transfer window.

However, crucially, Schuurs is right-footed rather than left – potentially a major spanner in the works for serious Liverpool interest.

In addition to a new defender, Liverpool are also on the lookout for a multi-functional midfielder to add more strength to their engine room. The Reds have already signed Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo this summer, but are likely to add another body to midfield before the conclusion of the transfer window.

Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer, while Crystal Palace’s Chieck Doucoure is also believed to have keen admirers at the club.
