The 25-year-old has started the season in electrifying fashion, scoring four goals in two games, guiding Die Roten Bullen to DFL-Supercup glory with a 3-0 win over €90m. However, Olmo’s phenomenal form has not gone unnoticed, with reigning European champions Manchester City keen to lure the Spaniard over to England.
Pep Guardiola’s influential midfielder Kevin De Bruyne will be out until the new year with a torn thigh muscle which leaves a significant void in the City midfield. Despite only signing a new deal in June that saw Olmo extend his stay in Saxony until 2027, Guardiola is hoping that his fellow countryman could be the heir to De Bruyne’s throne.
Nevertheless, when Sport Bild questioned Olmo on a possible move to Manchester City, the Spaniard commented: “I’m fully focused on the task in Leipzig, the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the cup. Manchester City is a big club, one of the biggest in the world. Josko went there. But I’m happy here.”
However, what may play into the hands of Guardiola and Manchester City is the release clause in Olmo’s contract, as in the summer of 2024, the 25-year-old can leave Leipzig for €90m. This means that while it is considerably unlikely that the Spanish international departs this summer, Marco Rose could be without his star man by the start of next season.
