The Mets had a lot of work to do in the offseason following a poor 2023 campaign, but like many other clubs in the league, they mostly took no action during free agency. Before the regular season even began, they strengthened their lineup by adding J.D. Martinez, but he has already been involved in an unexpected roster transfer.

Martinez has a very little window of time to prepare for the season after agreeing to a one-year, $12 million contract with New York on Thursday. In order to give Martinez time to get back into shape, the Mets have opted to option him to the minors to begin the season. As a result, New York will be without their new slugger for the first few games of the season.
According to Mike Puma:
“J.D. Martinez will not be with the Mets for at least the first ten days of the season as the team will option him to the minor levels to build up at-bats.
