Following Joel Embiid’s injury, the Philadelphia 76ers have experienced a minor decline in the standings. They are now in fifth place, having spent the majority of the season in third place.
In addition to losing Embiid, one of the main contributing factors has been the improvement of the teams surrounding them. One of the teams that is immediately behind them in the standings has signed a previous champion to a free-agent contract, adding to their roster of upgrades.
The Miami Heat have signed veteran point guard Patty Mills to a contract, according to a report published on Tuesday by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. He was waived by the Atlanta Hawks at the end of February after playing with them previously. Throughout his 19 games this season, Mills shot 38.2% from outside the arc and averaged 2.7 points per game.
The Heat are now trailing the Sixers in the standings by just one game. They have won six of their previous seven games, making them one of the league’s hottest teams right now.
Miami has improved their backcourt in a number of ways over the last few months. They first got Terry Rozier by trading Kyle Lowry. They have also signed other players in the buyout market, including Mills and Delon Wright.
