Mike  Tomlin made the decision to return to the Steelers officially Before 2024

For a number of years now, a sizable portion of Steelers supporters has desired the dismissal of head coach Mike Tomlin. They might succeed in getting what they desire after this year ends.

Furthermore, they might still want to exercise caution in their wishful thinking.

It feels like a divorce is imminent for the first time since Tomlin took over as the team’s coach in the early months of 2007. It’s also not like Tomlin would be fired by the Steelers. If there is a split, it will be either because Tomlin wants to leave or because the Steelers are called by a team searching for a new head coach (Commanders, for example) to start the process of essentially making a trade.

For Tomlin, what would the Steelers want? He has a year left on his contract. Jon Gruden had a one-year contract with the Raiders twenty-one years ago. In exchange for Gruden, the Buccaneers forfeited $8 million, two first-round selections, and two second-round selections. (Mike Tomlin, a young defensive backs coach, was on the defensive staff that Gruden took over.)

It couldn’t possibly take that much to obtain Tomlin. Particularly if Tomlin is prepared to try something that very few coaches ever dare. It is possible for Tomlin to express his satisfaction with ending his contract and becoming a free agent in 2025, either through internal or external means.

His readiness to take that action might help the Steelers be more realistic about whatever coach they might no longer want.

No matter how it turns out, there would be enough smoke for the teams searching for a coach to at least give Pittsburgh a call to inquire about Tomlin’s availability. Practically speaking, the owners of the teams that might switch coaches are probably already sleuthing around to determine whether Tomlin would want the position and whether the Steelers would let him go.

Where will it go, then? A lot of it is contingent upon events that transpire during the next three weekends. If Tomlin hasn’t already
