Billy Eppler, the former general manager of the New York Mets, is reportedly facing a nearly year-long suspension following an investigation that revealed he had submitted false injury report claims in order to secure roster spots for the 2023 MLB season.
There was a lot of hope when Billy Eppler was brought in to manage the Mets in 2021 that Flushing would once again see regular winning seasons. He had two seasons of highs and lows; in 2022, they won 101 games, but last year, they surprisingly underperformed.
Owner Steve Cohen chose to appoint a new team president in response to the Mets’ spectacular 2023 performance, and Eppler was expected to continue in his role as general manager under former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns. But shortly after Stearns formally assumed leadership, Eppler unexpectedly stepped down as a result of a league probe into injury reporting during the previous campaign.
The 48-year-old general manager who first became an agent and then a GM again was suspended through the 2024 World Series, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred finally stated on Friday.
