New York Mets declared one player officially expected to bring solid return before trade deadline and it’s not Pete Alonso

Even though the New York Mets are expected to be sellers and have a number of players available before the July 30 deadline, industry executives only think that one player in particular will bring in “an average prospect” for the team.

The New York Mets are 29-37 going into today’s MLB games, and they are rapidly dropping out of the race for the National League Wild Card. This season has been difficult since a team with low expectations has struggled to perform at a high level and has been plagued by crucial player injuries.

Because of this, the team is anticipated to be among the top sellers prior to the MLB trade deadline on July 30. A number of former All-Stars, notably slugger Pete Alonso, may be available for acquisition. But although though the team was able to acquire some elite prospects when they traded for Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer in July 2023, a recent rumour indicates that the result will be far less impressive this time around.

“The consensus among rival executives and evaluators is that the Mets’ most valuable trade chip, by far, is their starting pitcher on Thursday, Luis Severino,” SNY MLB insider Andy Martino said on Thursday.

Numbers for Luis Severino in 2024: 4–2, 3.25 ERA, 1.139 WHIP, 58 SO, 27 BB, and 72.0 IP
Martino was told by a senior American League executive that Severino might be able to bring the Mets “an average prospect” in a possible trade. Regretfully, the team doesn’t expect much in return from players like J.D. Martinez, Adam Ottavino, and Harrison Bader, whose names have been linked to trade rumours.

Executives in the game disagree over the value of native three-time All-Star Pete Alonso, with one saying, “For a rental, you don’t get much of anything for Alonso unless there is a bidding war.” One person speculated that he might be the kind of impact player who might be traded for multiple prospects and a big leaguer.

After switching teams in the summer, from the New York Yankees to the Mets, Severino has had a fantastic comeback season. Later this year, he will become a free agent once more.
