Pending a physical, the New York Mets and left-handed reliever Jake Diekman are in agreement on a contract, according to SNY insider Andy Martino.
According to Joel Sherman of The New York Post, the agreement is for a year with a vesting option. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that the transaction is valued at $4 million.
Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic were the first to report on Thursday that Diekman and the Mets were getting close to a deal.
The veteran lefty, who is coming off a successful season in which he reinvented himself after being picked up by the Tampa Bay Rays, will be a high-leverage arm in the Mets bullpen.
Diekman’s delivery changed after he joined the Rays, resulting in fewer walks. With the Rays, the southpaw pitched 45.1 innings with an ERA of 2.18 overall.
Now, Diekman is a part of the Mets bullpen that also includes 2022 All-Star Jorge Lopez, Brooks Raley, Drew Smith, Adam Ottavino, and outstanding closer Edwin Diaz.
It is unclear if the Mets are still seeking to bolster their bullpen following the acquisition of Diekman and right-hander Shintaro Fujinami, who finished last season with a 7.18 ERA in his lone big-league campaign.
