The left-hander performed better in 2023 than his final statistics would indicate.
Though he wasn’t the most well-known free agent, Sean Manaea—a former pitcher for the San Diego Padres—finished 2023 with a higher record than most of his contemporaries.
Manaea will now sign a two-year, $28 million contract with the New York Mets, with an opt-out clause that expires after the 2024 campaign. The news was first reported on Sunday by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Manaea was traded by the Padres to the Oakland A’s in April 2022 in exchange for minor leaguers Adrian Martinez and Euribiel Angeles. In his lone season with the Padres, he finished 8–9 with a poor 4.96 earned run average in 30 games (28 starts).
After the season, Manaea signed a contract with the San Francisco Giants, but his 2023 season didn’t start out well. Late in the season, the 31-year-old left-hander bounced back, going 2-1 in September with a 2.67 ERA in four starts and one relief outing.
