Through a transaction that adds a seasoned catcher to their minor-league system, the New York Mets strengthened their organisational depth.
According to the MLB Transactions log, the New York Mets acquired Chicago Cubs catcher Joe Hudson on Thursday, increasing their depth in the minor leagues.
Having not appeared in the Major Leagues since 2020, it is unclear what the Mets handed up in exchange for the 32-year-old Hudson.
With three catchers, including Curt Casali, on their Triple-A roster and starter Yan Gomes and backup Miguel Amaya in the Majors, the Cubs had little use for him.
The Mets are in a similar scenario, with Omar Navarez providing backup for Francisco Alvarez in the starting lineup. Austin Allen and Tomas Nido are Triple-A Syracuse’s duo. The well-travelled Hudson might be seen by the Mets as a mentor and backup for their first-round selection from two years ago, Kevin Parada, who is currently at Double-A.
He has appeared in 18 Major League games overall: nine in 2020 with Seattle, one in 2019 with St. Louis, and eight in 2018 with the Los Angeles Angels. He bats.167 in the major leagues.
Hudson is a lifetime .222 hitter in the minors with 56 home runs and 263 RBI. He was a sixth-round pick for the Cincinnati Reds in 2012 out of Notre Dame.
He bounced around pro baseball for several years before he broke in with the Angels.
Since Seattle, he’s been a Triple-A favorite, as he worked in the Pittsburgh system in 2021, the Tampa Bay system in 2022 and the Atlanta system in 2023. He’s also logged time in Winter Ball with Aguilas Cibaenas and with Gigantes del Cibao.
