NEW YORK (AP) — A plan to construct a 25,000-seat stadium for the New York City Football Club of Major League Soccer near to Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, was approved by city officials on Thursday.
Anticipated for completion in 2027, the $780 million soccer stadium will serve as the focal point of a 23-acre (9-hectare) neighborhood redevelopment project in Willets Point, which will also feature lodging, a new public school, retail establishments, and a hotel.
The brand-new stadium will be the first professional soccer arena in New York City. After winning the MLS title in 2021, NYCFC now has home games at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx or Citi Field.
The U.S. Open’s home court, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, will be next to Citi Field, the soccer arena.

The new stadium was granted by the City Council following decades of fruitless attempts to revitalize Willets Point, which was once a grimy collection of auto body shops.
