Leicester boss Enzo Maresca insists Coventry City have the “probably best player in the Championship” in Gustavo Hamer.
The Sky Blues’ star midfielder was outstanding against the Foxes in the opening game of the season, setting the opening goal for Kyle McFadzean to give City the lead early in the second half at the King Power Stadium where Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored a late double to take the full three points for the home side.
Hamer, whose Coventry future remains unclear with the rest of August left to run in the summer transfer window, had to go off in the 70th minute, after which Leicester snatched their victory.
“I’m quite happy because it’s never easy to win games especially against a team like Coventry who were playing a game to get promoted less than two months ago, so they’re a very good team. Very good organisation,” said Maresca after the 2-1 Leicester win.
“They are a team who were trying to get promoted and we were a team who have just been relegated and there are two opposite mindsets, so you need to be mentally strong and they showed great effort and character to come back from 1-0 down.
Asked if he thoughts that about Hamer before today’s game, he said: “Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I know him from before. I was working last year but at the same time when you enjoy football you watch all the competition and all of the good players, and he’s one of the… probably the best player in the Championship.”
Asked if there’s a plan if the club accept an offer for Hamer, Robins quipped: “Thanks for bringing that up. We have all sorts of plans and it is what it is. He’s still our player so yes, I have nothing to add to that.
